    LT95 gear chatter

    Hello,

I've got a loud gear chatter from the transfer case on the overrun in my LT95, at highway speeds it's so bad that I dread backing off the throttle. It has the TRB coversion and I've checked the output housing preload, I think it's just excessive play between all the gears.
    Could a thicker oil help?
Anyone had a similar issue or can you suggest something to try?

    Cheers Eric

How much lift to you have??? Do you still have the double carden in the front?

101s have this little thing called the 101 Rumble - exactly as you describe and is a design issue in the 101 caused by the high angle of the front drive shaft. We have to live with it in the 101s as no one has definitely found a solution but a double carden front shaft is likely to help.

If none of the above applies then UJs, pinion bearings or Tfr case output bearings could be the issue. (or front prop splines)

Don't know how much lift being a series chassis with coils grafted on, the front pinion is tilted up like a rangie and no double cardans at all.
Pinion transfer case bearings are all good.
I'll try the handbrake and front driveshaft tomorrow as removing the rear driveshaft didn't help.

So happy to say that it was the front prop shaft, it's now a joy to drive on the highway.
Tried the handbrake first but that wasn't rubbing.
Looking at the flange angles a double cardan shaft should work well as the pinion is pointing directly at the front output.

I am surprised it did not already have a double carden as all 109s with an LT95 had them originally.

    Garry,

    It's a 1966 ex army 2a which runs what's left of a rangie LT95.

Ok - so be aware that all 109s that had the LT95 as the original gearbox ie stage 1s (is the County a 110 or a 109) has the double carden front drive shaft.

When you described your symptoms it sounded exactly what I have each time I drive my 101 over about 80kph and lift off the throttle. When I grease the UJs and splines it goes away for about 60km and then it is back.

Your avatar pic indicated to me a lifted 109 so similar issues to the 101.

    Cheers

As this video shows Eric's truck is not exactly standard and I don't think it can be compared to any off the shelf LR out there....
