    ZF 4 speed Auto glitch

    Hello everybody .
    I recently purchased a 3.5 89 rangie .
Gearbox is good and strong on the shifts .
Something thats concerning is nearly all the time when I exit a roundabout or similar speed and load driving , the auto holds in top gear (overdrive)and doesnt automatically drop a cog to give good acceleration out of the roundabout . If I manually pull it back to third all is good and Ive gotten into the habit of doing so . If I bury the throttle it will shift down but surely it should sense the load and kick down itself under normal acceleration .Anybody got any clues as to what to adjust or replace to get it to change down itself .
    Regards to everyone .

Possibly one of 2 things off the top of my head.

1: the kick down is out of adjustment

2: the govenor has block ports form bits of clutch plates or crap in the fluid.

3: someone with more knowledge than me will give an answer

If you want the shifts firmer and to change down more readily , you should adjust the kickdown cable .
there should be 1MM between the "slug" on the cable and the mouth of the adjuster. If it is smaller than that it will change early and the line pressures will be low so it is not good for the box.
If it is now 1MM add one more MM and see what it feels like and so on. .

The auto in the early 3.5 RRC has a heavier governor weight causing early shifts, and a VERY early lock up too, about 70km'h from memory which IMO is way too early for an engine with only 3Nm of torque. As PhillipA says, try tightening the kickdown adljustment cable a few mm at a time, you will know when you have gone too far as the trans will bang back into 1st gear on deceleration to stop.
