Fill er up before screwing on , allways .You might lose abit because its almost a Horizontal mount , but you should be used to cleanining up the mess these things make as it leaks all over the front diff LOL
G'day,
When replacing my 200tdi's oil filter should I fill or half fill the filter with oil before placing it or just leave it and put it on as it is?

don't know what others do ,i have never bothered,Just let it idle for a couple of minutes and re check oil level.
same here for a 300TDi and make sure i have oil pressure fairly quickly, i have an oil pressure gaugedon't know what others do ,i have never bothered,Just let it idle for a couple of minutes and re check oil level.
Hey thanks for the replies very helpful.I think I'll give it a go filling then installing as 400HPONGAs suggested. I have no leaks on my car so i think i might also need some degreaser to clean up any mess... I like my car to be clean

I wasn't going to reply, but it got the better of me
I've pre-filled filters for near twenty five years now, but in all honesty the pump gets oil flowing through the system so quickly it probably makes no difference at all.
And FWIW, the engine (as in bearing surfaces) aren't dry when you start (unless the engine has been off for a very long time)
If a film of oil is there, the moment there's movement of the crank it forms a hydrodynamic wedge of lubricant between the journal and bearing, this lifts the crank up and away from the journal and lets it float between the bearings.
Pressure from the pump doesn't keep bearing journals apart, it keeps feeding cool oil to the journals so that the oil that is there doesn't overheat. (splash feed still works well on low speed engines and compressors)
Oh, and never pre-fill a diesel fuel filter, you stand a damned good chance of getting crap into the injection pump doing that.
rick130, I'm glad you ended up replying. Very good information there and you also answered my next question about the fuel filter.![]()
OK I must be the odd one, I half fill the oil filter
so i do not spill oil all over the diff..
Andrew
My engineering training will not let me put a filter on empty.![]()
