    Fuel pump cavitating.

G'day all, the fuel pump in my fuel tank has started to make a high pitched sound, to me it sounds like it is cavitating. How do you rectify this? I have already gone through one pump before but it made a completely different sound that could be heard over the engine.

Easo, I know it's flippant, but there is plenty of fuel in the tank? I reckon the scream is the pump drawing air from somewhere. On D2a, the fuel lines had a chafe spot near the rh chassis rail, and I'd guess a similar arrangement for a Deffie. Just check your lines haven't developed any pinholes in them.

Well pulled out the pump and found large amounts of sludge in and around it, take a look...
    Phone images sorry,

All the black stuff is slimy gunk,

    More sludge in the housing,

This hose is ment to be white ans see through,

    The pick up gause,

What I am in need of is some ideas of cleaning and removing this junk in order to try save the pump.

Also after I pump out the knackered fuel can I use soapy water to clean the tank? Or is there a better way?

    Regards Easo

You have algae in your fuel. You can clean the tank out with soapy water. leave it in the sun until the tank is completely dry. wash the stainer and pipes with petrol. When you refit, use a treatment in the fuel for algae for at least 5 full tanks and keep a spare fuel filter with you for a while ( you will need it)

    personally

Drop the tank get a steam cleaner into it

I've found that the snot LOVEs plastic and is a right bugger to move on once its gotten into a plastic tank because it will hide in any weld seams, hose joints, edges and imperfections int the tank.

Treat the diesel thats in there, pump it out through a couple of filters and you can reuse it, (although I reccomend using it in an older vehicle if you were going to)

SWMBO's disco has just gotten over the same thing and I'm still getting it in the main filter occasionally ( I think its coming out of the lines now Ive pulled and steam cleaned the tank)

Well Dave, that fuel access cover you put in my tray has proved its worth over and over now. Fuel pump has been cleaned over. The hard parts were the hoses. Got it all back in and forget to refit the fine gause filters! :0 Pluged it in and gave it a dry whirl and no loud squeeling noise.

Tomorrw I'll get fresh fuel and give that a go.
