In-car R&R of BW Viscous coupling "pod" ?

I'll be doing a auto-trans oil & filter change, and, whilst the cross-member is out is a good excuse to change over the VC and its housing. (From a spare "good" but '03 T/fer case. Mine is '05 with the temp sender.)

Is it do-able ? - What else needs to come out or be done, apart from the front box-to-chassis mounting and the brace that runs to the bell-housing?

All suggestions welcome and appreciated!

Yes, I know its 1/2 a job, but circumstances dictate this approach at present.

Hi James ....
Since you have not made reference to a certain Paj .....

I can let you know that it's a simple ABC, follow your nose job ...

"Basic" description as follows ......
Drop the oil
Remove the propshaft and tie it up to one side
Remove the rubber T/C mount and brackets
Remove the VC housing bolts

Reverse procedure for fit
Use a torque wrench for the bolts of the VC housing
Use Holimar 3 (Permatex Aviation non hardening cement) as a sealant for the housing

My recommendation tho, is to change the BW output shaft ... but you have to remove the rear housing to do this .....

Thanks Mike, I was concerned that the exhaust pipes might need to be unbolted... I've a lousy track record with E-studs & nuts.

Can the output shaft also be done in situ ? (another day, after buying a new one) - Get the distinct impression from searching the posts that its a 'consumable item'. - Like a Fuse.

The idea is to get back to 4WD ASAP, and re-build the other box at leisure.

I've changed the whole BW box .... & .... just the front & rear housings also

The exhaust definitely comes off for a Whole box change .... No removal of exhaust required for housings only (from memory)

Yes ..... Both front and rear housings + the shaft removal can be done in situ .... (Ripley's believe it or Not

)

That's my assessment of the output shaft also ....

You need to inspect it at least .....
