Well I owned a Delica with the 4m40 motor. Was a good enough motor. One major hassle with these motors is the head. Apparently when the head is cast there is a small number that the internal cores shift a bit. Now there is no way short of cutting every head into itty bitty pieces to know which one is sus. I found out the hard way the motor in our Delica had a crook head. They fail between number 3 and number 4 cylinders. The heads can`t be welded due to having ceramic pre combustion chambers fitted. There is a after market head made in Spain that is better that I could not afford. I just got a reco head that also gave way between number 3 and 4 cylinder. Hence why I don`t own a Delica. It is only a very small number of heads that fail, but some thing to consider considering I managed to find two of them. I got the Delica with about 100,000 K`s on it so don`t know it`s previous history. Was about another 40,000 before the head failed. But it was only a family bus for us with a small amount of easy 4wd`ing.
    Cheers Hall

Exactly. For the price of a 300TDi rebuild, I can buy 3 or 4 Jap diesels with guaranteed low kms.

The guys over here get the Lexus 4.0 V8 for under AUD$1000 with an auto box!
Guess what I was also considering for a while.....

Unladen on 1.6 tons, the fuel consumption was around 9L/100km (11km/L). I reckon 12.5L/100 in an unladen 110. That's good consumption, I'd have it any day.

I can pick up the QD32ETi (with semi electronic pump) for AUD$2000, and the TD27T4 mechanical for around $1600. The QD32ETi will happily put out over 100Kw and 330Nm. That's at the top edge of what I'm happy exposing the LT85 to anyway.
11km/l in a 1.6t part-time 4wd vehicle will translate to 9 km/l in a fulltime 4wd vehicle with worse aerodynamics. It's your money, but the TD27, QD32, 1KZ or 4M40 etc will all drink more than a 4BD1T without providing anywhere near the power or torque. The 4BD1T in my rangerover returns 10km/l on the open road and is producing in the mid 500Nm's for torque. Isuzu gearbox though.

If you want to limit yourself to 100kw and 300Nm, then a 300tdi will do that easily and fit with a lot less hassle and provide better fuel economy.

What is the electronic control in the QD32 pump for and how many $$ will it take to sort out?

Why do you think some engines are cheap while 4BD1T's are over 25 years old and still command big $$

The mention of a supercharger is a worry.

I hear you mate. 300TDi engines are as scarce as hen's teeth over here.
Easily $5000 for a suspect used item. I'm still searching for a 4BD1T but then there are the adapter issues. Nobody seems to make an adapter for the LT85 and I'd need to get an adapter for the NPR gearbox.

Like I said: if I can get only 8km/L I'll be happy as. That saves me ZAR80 per 100km. That's $10. So a $15 saving per day.

I can pay off the conversion in the first year. And then I can actually get some range out of the 150L tanks that I have fitted to the 110.

But the search continues and all suggestions will be noted and taken into consideration.

    LT85 upgrade options?

What can I do to strengthen the LT85 split-case gearbox? (prefix 25D?)

Or is it better to sell it and find an R380?
