    ZF auto dipstick oil level

Another thread relating to my 89 rangie zf transmission .
Checking the tranny oil cold with engine running after selecting all gears the fill level is showing full .
Check it again hot after 15 mins driving and its not even showing on the dipstick .
Id have thought it would have risen when it got hotter .

Can anyone confirm this on their rangie for me sort out my confusion here .

could this whole scenario including the holding in first for ages when cold be as simple as a blocked filter . I dont see how a tranny filter could get that blocked though .

which dipstick do you have for starters.

if you have the one with hot and cold marks on it use them.

If you dont the missing oil is in the TC and the cooler add oil till you are somewhere between the marks (aim at the low point first) with the engine and trans warm with the engine at idle.

No hot or cold marks just 2 indicator lines
How long should the pump take to fill the converter ? Idling for 5 mins cold I have the level perfect .
Then later when hot level disappears .
Maybe clogged filter do you think ? Then when oil hot it can get through .

nope if your filter was that clogged it would be rooted TX time and youd be cavitating the pump getting loss of drive, odds are that when its cold the cooler is empty and when it hot its full.

You need to check the level when warm on flat ground. Your oil will have gone to the cooler and torque converter.
Took ages to get mine right but I have a huge cooler set up.

warm as in, normal operating temperature?

I filled mine as per the manual, ie cold, level, in neutral after selecting gears.

I filled as per rover guidelines . Idling in neutral cold . Then after driving 15 mins its not even showing on the dipstick as though Idling cold doesnt fill all the system !

I dont have the OEM rangie handbook, all my service manuals specify filling at normal operating temp on level ground.

It makes sense to test oil level when warm and idling in neutral .
On the dipstick it says test cold idling in neutral .
