    starter motor woes

As I write this think of every expletive you have ever heard and put them between each word written here.

I fried my starter motor no biggy really Greg from outcast help out with another one - Thanks Greg

I couldn't get the bolts undone with an allen key so I bought a 1/2" drive allen key for my socket set. I was a bit worried about the bottom one as I had butchered it a bit but it came out no worries.

Unfortunately the top one had been rounded out at some stage, I just finished it off completely - now I have a rounded out allen head that I cant access and until I get it out the car is going nowhere and it is one of the very few times in my life were I have to say I dont know what to do!

    Blythe,

Being that your starter is no good, just break it off to get to the allen head bolt so you can then rotate it with a cold chisel. It is about the only way to get at it. A few decent hits with a good size (read big) hammer should shatter the ally nose housing away from the main body, then you will be able to get to the offending bolt.

I have had to do this, and replaced the socket head bolt with a new one and fitted it with copperkote or nickel antisieze on refit.

You CAN use a normal hex head bolt BUT it will require a 3/8" drive thin wall socket to get at in future.

As Justinc says, bash it. Or use a bottle jack to snap it off. I have refitted a few starters with standard hex head bolts, then you can get at both the top and bottom bolts with a normal ring spanner. Easy peasy.

Only if no extractors are fitted IIRC, but yes a far better fastener than a Allen head bolt, where you only get one chance

I like the bottle jack idea...

thanks for the thoughts as I feel like burning it at the moment, destroying the old starter motor sounds like just the therapy I need. I have a trolley jack and a bottle jack between the two I should be able to break something

Oh and yes I have genie tuned extractors just to make it more interesting.

Was thinking about removing them and using a grinder with a cut off disk to cut the head off of the bolt, but I like the idea of jackling it off to get to the nut

put an easy out into it...

failing that tap in the next size up toqz bit then undo it with that.

breaking a prefectly repairable part, sigh what madness is this?

While I normally have an adversion to breaking things to get them out this time it worked a treat. I'm not sure if it is justifiable anger management but gee it made me feel better

Because of the amount of rain we are having there is about an inch of water through the shed (didn't know that would happen)

So the jack idea went west and hello mash hammer. it worked a treat then I had to get under it anyway to tap out the rest of the aluminium housing from around the bolt, it literally came out using my fingers.

I didn't put it in my first post but I had already tried to use easy outs it was to mushed up and not deep enough to get purchase with it.

Gentlemen thank you for your help as I was at my wits end and it ended up a very easy fix, well removal to be accurate.

The starters on the later Rover V8's aren't worth repairing Dave, the reduction gears etc aren't available so all you are doing is a set of brushes and solenoid etc, a new Bosch starter is under $300.

Blythe said he had 'fried' it, if that is the case then the commutator etc will be toast and more than likely would need a set of bushings etc too.

Plus I sensed he needed the therapeutic feeling of belting something with a hammer, hence the 'bust it off ' advice

BTW, haven't forgotten the Greyknights fan, still sitting here waiting for me to get it away to him...

Dont stress it, hes stoked to have a spare engine sitting in the stable over at perth that can deal with both his and my sisters rides... Hes got a new box and tcase in lara and has me with ear to ground for a slop box and Tcase for the sis's ride.

Ida still tried to save it.. Even if it was only for a dodgy rebuild I have never broken a part on any of my vehicles that I have a spare "well its dodgy but it'll get me out of trouble till the new one arrives" part for.
