    Good defender oil

Hi, my oil is a bit low on my 1994 300tdi defender, should I top it up or drain it all out then put 6.8l in and change the filter. What is the best oil to use in the 300tdi. I've owned the truck for 3 days and the oil has been on low since I bought it. I have to go to Canberra on the weekend too.

    Thanks

    Pete

It depends on when it was last serviced Pete, and how it was driven and how low is low ?
If it's only half way between the 'add' and 'full' marks and was serviced within the last few months, don't sweat it.
If you don't know when it was last serviced it might pay to change the engine oil and filter and check every other compartment too.

For engine oil, any common 15W-40 diesel oil which meets the API diesel spec of CI-4 or CI-4+ would be a good start.

Off the top of my head, good oils that meet these specs are Fuchs Titan Ultralube 15W-40, Castrol RX-Super, Caltex Delo 400, Mobil Delvac MX, etc
See what you can get locally for a reasonable price and use that.

If you only do short trips (<20km at a time) 5,000km oil change intervals would probably be advisable.

If you do longer runs, 10,000km OCI's are fine when using good oils IMO.

Lubes can get really confusing, particularly with the way these things are marketed and if you really want to get confused, have a peruse of here http://www.aulro.com/afvb/good-oil/
There's a sub section devoted to lubricant discussions.

Not that this is good advice and you shouldnt follow it ... but for future reference a tdi can be 2L lower than even starting to register oil on the dipstick and oil pressure is still maintaned. A bit less volume than that and the pressure starts to drop.

If the stick is wet you should be fine

    Hi Pete
    >>What is the best oil to use in the 300tdi.
In my 1994 300TDi Defender (probably a close relative of yours!) I use Shell Rimula R3 X Engine Oil - 15W-40. I've always get it from Super Cheap Auto. If there's any suspicion of when the last oil change was done I'd recommend just going ahead and doing one before your trip. Cheers, Simon
p.s. I religiously change the oil every 5000KM - regardless of what type of driving I've been doing - it's a cheap way to get peace of mind.
