Why I Never take my Landy to a mechanic

So I had a job at a well established Motor Garage to locate some underground cables and I lifted the bonnet to turn on my 12V power to the accessory power output on the bumper to connect a bilge pump to drain a telstra pit.

I notice a mechanic looking in there for a good few mins and asked where is the throttle body, I said I didn't know what he was talking about, they don't have a Throttle body.

Then I found this on ebay

mind you my TD5 has had the EGR removed, no wonder he could not find the 'Throttle body'

As a former mechanic, they're not all bad

Though I do have to wonder why a mechanic is looking for a throttle body on a diesel?

I found a throttle body on a 2002 NA Toyota Hilux, it is an on/off device that opertates with the ignition key.

It was whispered in my ear, when I purchased my EGR blanking kit, it might be a good idea to keep my engine cover in place , and either do all maintainence myself, or use trusted LR mechanics.Whether this advice was designed to frighten me into giving major work to this particular mob, or whether there was a genuine reason , who knows. I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

its because if you get a really really honest mechanic he will tell you that your vehicle is now not emissions compliant and he must now refit the emissions stuff at your expense or report it.

Funnilly enough my 05 TD5 passed a RWC with the egr blanking kit inplace and engine cover removed, and cat replaced with a straight pipe.

Also when I sold my 06 Toyota 105 1HZ it also passed RWC at the local Toyota Dealer with EGR removed, And we have strict new RWC regs in victoria !!

I think the advice is scare tactics.

Ah yes I remember some of the old Nissan SD33's with a throttle butterfly. But on later diesel engines are they not just a butterfly related to EGR rather than something that controls the amount of revs like the throttle on petrol engine. I have just never heard of a EGR butterfly classed as a throttle body as regarded on a petrol engine. Totally different function. yes or no? Please correct me if I am wrong.
