RRC Transmission and Transfer into a D1

Hi, just a quick question to anyone that may know.

I have been having a bit of a problem getting my transfer case back into high range in my 1996 Auto D1. It keeps grinding against the gears. I try doing it on the move, stopped, giving it some revs to match the speed and eventually it will pop in. It goes into low range ok. Is this a sign it's on it's way out.

My question is, I have seen an Automatic transmission and transfer case out of a 1987 RRC in good working order. Are these the same as the Disco for a direct swap.

    Thanks.
    Cheers, David.

    before you do try this...

stop the vehicle on a slight hill with just the foot brake
    select neutral on the tcase
    put the auto in park
attempt to select high on the Tcase, (maintain effort on the range selector for the next few steps)
    release the foot brake
    select drive on the auto
    gently accelerate
    brake
    (release the range selector)
    continue driving.

IF that works for you then you have 2 potential things happening

    1. the dogs in the tcase are on the way out, its not fatal yet but its now worth the effort to start planning an overhaul.
    2. the auto is maintaining drive even in neutral.

Thanks Dave I'll give it a try. I did try it in both neutral and park. I'll have a bit more of a play.

On the other note, is the transfer case from an 87 RRC compatable for a swap if needed.
    Cheers, David.

The Auto box in the 87 is likely coupled to a Borg Warner viscous coupling transfer case which are O.K. but not as good as the LT230 in th D1

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

I was having a thinks about it on the drive home from work. If the transfer case is a dog clutch type setup the idea speed would need to be low for the gears to mesh. At times when I go back to neutral the ideal sits a bit high, around 1200 and take a while to settle if at all. Some time a jab of the accelerator help. (yes I have cleaned the valve at the end of the Plenium). Fine in drive so put up with it.

If the ideal is up a bit high could this be stopping the dogs engaging. I will have to see if this coincides with the times it wont engage.
    Cheers, David.

AFAIK, all autos retain a bit of drive in neutral and if you have a high idle this will be exacerbated.
In my 92 RRC, I initially had to stop the engine sometimes to put into low range as the car had never been into low range before I bought it and everthing seemed sticky.
So yes this could cause difficuly with selecting low range. Try stopping the engine, into low range then restart.

I do know that mine has a BW so is different, but the issue seems to be hydraulic drag in the auto causing load on the input gear of the transmission.

other way to tell a Borg Warner viscous coupling transfer case is by the high & low stick, it will only move up & down, or high & low.

it has no sideway movement for CDL
