Hi all,
Had a Puma with a VERY noisy EGR valve operation, screeching while revving/ driving and really loud at switch off during its self clean cycle. Removed said valve to inspect and discovered it is only 18 months old. Check engine lamp has never been on so likely it is still working OK albeit very noisy.
They are dismantleable, so I pull it apart and discover the NEW valve has been assembled with no lubrication at all. The electric motor driving it through 2 gears rotates quite quickly against a clock type return spring, and the gears rotate on bronze bushings. All I did was clean and lube them and refit. all quiet now
Basically, If the EGR valve is working, IE no symptoms like surging and smoking, or check engine lamp illuminating then it is worth lubricating the internals of the valve to remove the noise.
New Valve from LR was $298, about 1 hour to remove and refit. Bit of a tight one to get at but not as bad as you think when you first look at it

Just as a further from Justinc's comments, here's a few pictures of the valve and its gear assembly:
As you can see LR, (Ford...), have hardly tried with the lubricant. I know of a few people that have saved themselves a few dollars by just cleaning the unit, common culprits seem to be the problems JC has described, the electric motor filling up with crud, and the electric contacts getting dirty.
Cheers,
