Thread: what size wheels can i run?

From Memory, the original max tyre size was 28" 225 75 16.

With a 2" lift the max you can go without a body lift is about 235 85 16 or 750/16 or roughly 32" (closer to 31.5") with a camel cut on the rear guards and adjusting your steering lock stops.

Normally anything above 32" you would fit flares and off set rims so you don't loose too much steering lock.

You have to remember and this is the really important part that increasing the tyre diameter will also raise the final drive ratio so your engine will have to work harder on take off or under load.

This can be managed by either changing transfer case high range gear ratios to that of the Defender which is very expensive but will bring the final drive ratio's for up to 32" in line or above 33" you would probably want 4.11:1 Diff gears which is also very expensive.

It is cheap and easy to change wheels and tyres but it can make your car expensive to drive and a real slug so keep that in mind.

Stock Discovery's with alloys have 235/75-16 on them, i have 245/75-16 on mine, 2 inches should get you to fit 265/75-16 but WILL require change of ratios in either TCase or diffs as outlined before, my car is standard aswell

Following on from what has been said

if you go too big in tyres you start breaking other things as all components are quite well matched. Once that happens you get into this endless circle of break it make it better break something futher down the line make that better etc etc. I am one of the ones guilty of this

Brakes seems to suffer with larger tyres as well. Like anything though it deends on how you drive it

Just checked my tyre size that came with my secondhand D1 any they are
255 65 16.
The car handles really well on the roads but am I doing damage to the car by having this size tyre?
