thanks again Frank, you're a champ! I'll do that, didn't even think about it. Have a mechanic in the family but it's his livelihood so don't like to ask for love job favours but he might also be able to offer some guidance.
    cheers Gerald
ps how'd ya go in the end with that other somewhat "heated debate" about shackles and loads; I appreciated your comments on that one.

I don't like to part with the hard earned dough unnecessarily but am thinking that getting the suspension and steering sorted out properly is probably not a bad idea. Cos whilst I can have a crack at most things stuff like swivel preload is out of my league; wouldn't know where to start. Hopefully it is something simple like the steering but suspect something more sinister. Thanks again guys
    cheers Gerald
Swivel prepoal is easy to set all you realy need is a fish scale as long as the bottom bearing is good. I took a few shims off the top of mine and its like a new car. I would have a look at the steering box as well. Make sure the bottom end of the box does not move up and down where the shaft comes out of the steering box. If it moves up and down where the shiny shaft comes out of the box then the box is stuffed. Also with some help move the steering wheel around and anything that rattles is worn. Mine had bad joints in the steering shaft and the arm on the bottom of the box was loose and keeps getting loose I will have to use some loctite and the rattle gun rather than just a spanner every few weeks. keep puitting it off.

Mine was front shocks - less than 12 months old but apparently buggered.
It felt like I was hanging onto a bag of wallabies.
Tried new bushes, damper, swivel preload - no help.
    New gas shocks, problem solved.

Yeah, thanks all; it does have me thinking it might be easier to pay for a proper diagnosis and then have a crack at doing it myself.
    thanks again gents
