    feed back through steering wheel

I was driving on the on over pass between two highways on a sweeping right hand turn. I hit a small pot hole and got the voilent feedback and shaking. It has happened twice in the same place.
    Any ideas?
Have not had a look yet.
It an 83 county so there is probably a few issues.

Ah, the Dread Wheel Shimmy Of Death. Check your panhard rod bushes for looseness first, then all the other steering and suspension bushes/joints.

    feed-back-through-steering-wheel

Found one tie rod end so far.
Been putting off the swivel pins for a while.
I have a crack in the front diff and have a replacment to go in as well as new springs.
The thing is you would want to do the whole job at once. And the brain says you donjt need that much work. But no one else is going to do it for me Guess I better do it.

ended up doing both passenger side tierod ends and taking a few shims of the swivel pin on the sam side.
Took it for a run on the same road and it seems good.

Hi guys, I also have a knock or feedback through the steering. It can happen when I'm sitting on 100 - 110kmh (if I'm going downhill ; it's a 300TDi ) along the freeways (so no potholes involved) It seems to be a firm, constant light knocking feeling (almost as if someone was tapping the steering with a hammer) with no associated noises. Is it likely to be the same things.
    thanks in advance
    cheers Gerald

Could be wheel shimmy, swivel preload, buggered tie-rod ends, crook bushes, or heaven forbid, worn uni-joints a good inspection is required, Regards Frank.

    Didge,

Another possibility is the uni joints on the shaft linking the steering column to the steering box.

My 130 had an annoying 'rattle' on the highway above about 80 through the steering wheel, and I eventually found that one of the uni joints (at the steering column end) was loose. Previous owner dodgy maintenance?

Tightened up, and was still a bit loose (must have fretted away a bit), so I replaced the joint and this fixed it.

Some fun times getting to it as well...............

May not be your problem, but sounds just like it.

    Cheers,

    Mike.

Thanks Frank and Mike, tie rod ends all new but don't know about the rest. I think both prop shafts could do with replacement and am thinking about trying to do some overtime and just pay an expert to sort it out. Whad'ya reckon on that idea. I don't like to part with the hard earned dough unnecessarily but am thinking that getting the suspension and steering sorted out properly is probably not a bad idea. Cos whilst I can have a crack at most things stuff like swivel preload is out of my league; wouldn't know where to start. Hopefully it is something simple like the steering but suspect something more sinister. Thanks again guys
    cheers Gerald

There are comprehensive tutorials in "Good Oil" that will guide you throgh both procedures, not too hard and basic tools only, check it out, may come in handy if you have to do some repairs in the bush, see also if there are any AULROIANS in the near vicinity that could help/show you how, Regards Frank.
