    Rover V8 - cam journal to bearing clearance

    Hi Folks.

    I'm sure there are some that know on here, but my initial inquiry may have been missed.

    Does anyone know what the acceptable camshaft journal to bearing clearance range is? My WSM doesn't specify it since it was published when Rover deemed blocks to be unserviceable if they had any issue with cam bearings and they were not considered to be replaceable.

    I've had new finished cam bearings fitted but want to check the dimensions since the machinists took two goes at it and have honed the second set of bearings.

    Why not just get the data for a chev V8 or similar.

    It will not be that much different, particularly for say a Holden iron V6 as it is the great grandchild of the Buick 215.

    I've spent well over an hour trawling through looking for Rover specific figures and certainly didn't find that. Looked at other V8 stuff too. The tolerances for various sizes of American V8 differ enormously, but some are so fine that my estimated 0.035" is marginal.

    0.0010/0.0060" does seem very rubbery but 0.0035" sits in the middle. I imagine that oil pressures would be quite different at opposite ends of that range.

    .0009/.0059 is vertical oil clearance .

    If you want std shaft and tunnel have them in this book .

    If you Google 5C4326 it`s the Repco ACL part # for a cam set , suit V8 Rover don`t know what you`ll find though .

    Now just like my holden/chev/ford v8's woud you also believe that each cam bearing has a specific position for fitting,thats in degrees on a clock,not the obvious od diameters.

    I certainly believe that they have a position more appropriate than the 2nd from front landed in for the "first" go at the bearings. Alignment with the oil gallery is perfect now so I can't see why they didn't just do it right, once.

    whats alignment with oil gallery ? when you look in aroung cam bearing journals 2,3,4 ,is it not so that there is 360 degree channel ? Now this is why the vertical clearance is quoted , because the valve train loading,loads the cam to vertical down spot (6 oclock) therfor observing the required wedge oil effect , you would be supplying those cam bearings with NO oil if the oil hole was not positioned between 12 oclock and 3 oclock .(Road engines ,2 oclock , race engines 4 oclock)
    Doing this step alone will double your Cam , and Cam Chain/sprockets reliable life alone !!

    Use your imagination for a moment.

    There is an oil feed hole from the gallery behind, no? The "experts" inserted the bearing rotated a couple of degrees too far clockwise such that there was a 1mm aperture rather than the approximately 4mm aperture achieved if the bearing was aligned the same as the other four they'd carefully aligned.
