manual disco with no drive at all

hi long time forum stalker here. i have a 97 300tdi disco 1 manual and i have no drive.
last week i blew my rear diff, and as i have run out of spare rear diffs (third one ive blown) so i pulled the axles out and fitted my dummy drive flanges (from snapped axles ) and took out the tailshaft and ive been driving round in front wheel drive with the centre diff lock in.

then today driving up a slight incline i just all of a sudden lost all drive, felt as if it popped out of gear. took it home (tow truck ) and thinking it was the front diff started pulling the front end apart till i found that it wasnt the front diff, nor the CVs or axles as the front propshaft turns when i turn the front tyres, as does the handbrake drum.

    and then the weird part.

put the car in gear and tried turning the tyre, and i could feel the compression of the engine, yet when the engine is running the tyre only barely moves by itself in first gear low range, and change to third gear and it struggles to move by itself even more.

been talking to a few mates who are apprentices, mechanics and diesel mechanics and there stumped, i got one mate who is a land rover mechanic coming over tomorrow he thinks it may be the clutch but hes not sure, as ive not had any problems with the clutch so far other than rattling a bit when out of gear every now and then.

so is it the clutch or could it be something else? gearbox maybe or an input/output shaft?

Have you drive to any of the tailshafts? There might be a certain amount of drag in the front diff to turn the shaft but not vice versa.

If no drive to either tailshaft, remove the back cover of the transfer case & check the gearbox output shaft splines. They & the transfer input gear splines wear out from a lack of lubrication (if the oil feed mod hasn't been done).

    Give this a try
Gear in neutral, lock the centre diff, apply your handbrake and raise the front wheels, if you can turn the front propshaft the centre diff is either not locking or damaged.
If you cannot turn the front propshaft it is likely the input splines.

If the splines aren't worn already, you can cross drill the transfer case input gear to allow oil to reach the splines.

**This was mainly a problem when the cars were a couple of years old. Chances are any car that has gone this long without a problem will have had a fix of some sort done (either the gear cross drilled or a replacement modified gear fitted).

I'll second this. I'd be very surprised one has lasted this long without the mod. I had an early 300Tdi/R380 and it went at 40 000km.

just checked the innards of the transfercase it looks fine, no wear at all. I cant really try to turn the propshaft with the handbrake on as the handbrake barely works cause the transfer is leaking into it, so it wont grip unless you pull it up 50 metres before i stop.

after a closer inspection with a couple of mates we found that there is a grinding and clunking noise coming from the gearbox, and if i forced the tyre to turn when it is in the air it would lose its grip against the engine compression and slip out and turn alot more freely.

I drained the gearbox oil and it was full of metal, so not sure what exactly has happened but the problem seems to lie in the gearbox, im going to take it out and see if i can identify the problem, i have a spare r380 (with only 20,000kms on it) and i needed to reseal the transfer anyway so do it all at once.
