    Defender 300tdi rear main leak + clutch slip!!!

    Hey guys I NEED YOUR HELP!!!!!!!

    2 weeks ago the clutch failed - so last weekend I replaced full clutch kit, fork, thrust bearing, slave cylinder, and rear main even though the old one wasn't leaking.

    I have now covered less than 500Km and the clutch is slipping on boost when climbing steep hills on the highway.

    I have also developed a leak - seems like all the classic symptoms of rear main

    Is there anything else I can check - I used all genuine land rover parts and fitted the rear main dry and with the protector, I have since read that you should put instant gasket either side of the "proper" gasket it this correct?

    I am just hoping the brand new clutch isn't shot now - is it possible to clean the clutch if it has been contaminated with oil from a leaking rear main?

    Any help would be hugely appreciated

    when you replaced the flywheel bolts, did you use a thread sealing compound? the oil from around the rear of the crankshaft will run down the threads of the bolts and spray out onto the clutch friction plate All tdi's have open holes through into the crankcase at the flywheel mounting flange.

    rear main

    Hi

    what a pain hey when you put in the rear main seal did you touch the rubber at all. they can be a bit a bit tricky sometimes.

    I must realy enjoy pushing the boundrys when your invovled When i fitted my old deefer Tdi engine to my disco i changed flywheels and never used thread lock nor sealer and guess what no clutch slip ever Is luck on my side or what mate

    could be the flex line is collapsing and is holding residual pressure on the clutch preventing it from fully engaging.

    Yes mate I used thread lock, I spoke to my local landy expert and it has to be leaking from the rear main gasket, so I guess I will be pulling the box out this weekend to have a little look.

    Yes the use of sealant instead of the gasket around the seal carrier is the preferred method.
