Is this right about Discovery front wheel bearings?

    From another forum:

I've owned 4 Golfs, my wife's car is a Golf we bought brand new a few years ago......so Im a Golf fan.

HOWEVER, listen to the guys that say check out the prices of parts, and with many parts you can't just buy the bit you need, you have to buy the 'set' so to speak. Bit like front wheel bearings on a Disco, you have to buy the whole hub for $700, not just a $30 wheel bearing.

Disco II has the bearings as part of the hub but $700 is a bit off the mark these days. More like around $200-300 for the assembly.

Thanks. Thought it sounded exaggerated. How often would they need replacing, can I ask?

It really varies, we have had to do 2 in our (rear left) as both developed oil leaks which drenched the brake disc in oil !!!

Depends what you do with them if you are constantly in water they will need to be replaced more often.
My dads D2 first wheel bearing went at 190000 or 11 years
The others are still running fine

Provided you are asking about 'george' the Disco 1, then it depends on how and where you drive and how often you service them. When the next big service rolls around, treat yourself to a set ( $65 kit inc seal per wheel).
Then you won't have to do them for some years to come.

On a Disco 1 you can change wheel bearings like normal, D2's have a sealed unit, this is what you need to do the whole hub on (~$250)

No its not George, I think it's a D2. Was stated on another forum and it didn't sound right, so I wanted to check with the 'gurus'.

I knew there was another reason why I bought a D1.
