    Maxi Lockers Plumbing

I've found a leak in one of the air line connections for the Maxi Drive lockers, Are there any problems with removing the canister etc from the system and just plumbing the the line which comes out from under the dash (through the firewall) straight into the brake booster to plenum chamber hose (V8 rangie). Its the same place it was connected before, just without the additional pipework etc.

I have tested the lockers and they do work, as do my brakes. It was the lack of power for the brakes which started me searching for leaks.

The reason for the tank is that if you put your foot down with the diff locked, vacuum will diminish and the locker may unlock at the most inconvenient time.

You may be thinking ARB lockers where the locking dog is spring loaded.

AFAIK, the you need a vacuum supply in order to change the state of the Maxidrive locker (engaged to disengaged and vice versa). The actuator is a double acting pneumatic rod, and requires the vacuum to be "switched" to the other side of the piston to disengage.
Losing vacuum will not unlock a locked diff, but means you won't be able to change its state once the vacuum is lost.

To answer the OP's initial question, the canister does two things; smooths any pressure fluctuations in the vacuum line and accumulates vacuum in a "storage tank". I'm only guessing here, but it may be required to engage the locker "in one go" rather than gradually, somewhat like pumping up a tyre from an air tank Vs direct from a compressor. The plenum chamber of your V8 may be acting as a storage tank however so it may not be required(?).

Anyone know if Mal installed vacuum tanks on petrol powered landies? (I don't imagine he would have gone through the trouble if they weren't required).

It will be fine. It's just a vac tank to allow operation once the engine is off

Yes, my RRC has one, and I was going to post that he wouldn't have included it in the kit unless it was necessary as it adds several connections.

Thanks for the replies. It was also suggested to plumb it directly to the plenum using the hose at the front drivers side - which I believe on some models is for the cruise control, but with mine I think its to do with controlling the heater etc under the dash as I don't have cruise control. However, as it all appears to be working where it is I think I'll leave it alone.

I had it tuned on Friday and figures/performance were back to where I believe they should be. Hopefully it might have also resolved the fuel consumption issues but will have to wait and see on that one.

keep the maxi tank, it increases the volume of vacuum available.

    it doesn't leak green either.
