Hi theg, if your alternator setup is anything like my old 86 RRC, there should be three wires. The big one is obviously the output and the two smaller wires are for the alt. lamp on the instrument panel and the 'pulse' output for the tacho.

Where does the excite wire on my 89 rangie head to from the alternator to sense its voltage ?

inside the dash to come off the ignition..
in a pinch for testing purposes you can tap the +12v to the coil

I see there are 2 wires connected to 1 of the connections . I think its the exciter terminal . I read that the dash light is the exciter feed / Can this be correct .
Ive got a glitch in my alternator developed yesterday . These are the symptoms .Lamp is glowing full on start up then glows very very dim from then on . Volts at battery stay at 14 to 14.2 when running . If I turn on the load with lights and high beam plus air con there is no output lifting voltage , the voltage drops to static at about 12.4 . Appears the alt cannot deliver the load but whats causing the lamp to glow very dim constantly .
Could this be a voltage problem to the exciter terminal ?Affecting the function of the voltage regulator .
sounds like the regulators about stuffed and has a high resistance to its earth or you have diodes out...
the big clue being the lights on when the ignitions off.

sounds like youve got a couple of diodes going open circuit in the rectifier

The alternator is excited via the ignition and the dash bulb. The voltage sense is connected internally via the diodes and the main battery terminal. When the regulator see 12V inside the alternator the excite circuit is the same voltage each end, ie the globe goes out. If your globe glows faintly it may be a bad connection or earth. If the globe glows about 1/2 brightness one of the main power diodes is open circuit. Max output of the alternator is then halved.
