200tdi leaks into bellhousing and flywheel removal

    Hi everyone,
At the moment I'm in the process of swapping my clutch and I made the (in hindsight) silly decision of pulling the gearbox out to get at it. When i split the bellhousing a bit, maybe 1/2 cup, of engine oil came out.
Is there anywhere else that the engine oil could leak into the bellhousing other than the rear main seal?
I planned on changing the seal regardless, but the flywheel is proving to be a little stiff, and holding it in place is not an easy task with the engine in the car.
Is there another way to unbolt the flywheel, my pneumatic rattle gun isn't big enough. Next plan is make a bracket to lock it in place, after that it'll be to rip the engine out and see what toys the local mechanic has.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
    Cheers,
    Joe

After you figure a way to chock the flywheel (Oil in cylinder, wood etc) a 75cm breaker bar should do the job. Since you are going to replace the engine rear main seal, think about replacing the input seal on the gearbox. There is a possibility that the oil in the bellhousing was gearbox oil discolored by the burnt friction material.
Usually if the rear main goes, there is more oil involved.

Seems you had the wading plug installed, the hole is there to allow leaking oil a way to drain off, instead of coating your clutch with oil, Regards Frank.

Ok... I'm not sure if 200TDI is similar to 300TDI, but I did mine recently and maybe you can apply similar technique to yours?
For the flywheel I held the crank front bolt with a ratchet by wedging an extension bar against the chassis - worked well.

And as to oil leaking, again, not sure if 200TDI has this as well, but 300 has t seals on the rear main bearing cap, which have leaked in mine.
(If you do have them, make sure you use blackmaxx around the tseal, makes it easier to slide in, and helps sealing it for good)

    Good luck and have fun!!

I've got a bit further on it, managed to get the flywheel off by bolting a plate to lock the mounting bolts on the flywheel and bell housing bolts together, then a 1 metre bar and was really quite effortless in the end.
Next job was the rear main seal, I pulled the old one out and discovered it wasn't the problem. Had quite a bit of sealant to keep it good. So I managed to get the new one in with more sealant and it's looking the goods.
I changed the spigot bush while I was in there as well.
Just got to wait til a new gearbox input seal arrives then it's time to put it all back together.

Have you removed the wading plug? Regards Frank.

Yeah I'm going to pull it out when I've got it all back together.
Out of interest, how much oil is usually meant to be in the bell housing? I'd assume none but is a little bit acceptable?

Not really, oil in the bellhousing means a leak in either the gearbox or engine and neither is good, but it is a Land Rover and it is a No Cost Option, LOL, Regards Frank.
