Blocked exhaust? Dead rat, collapsed baffle, vagrant tools etc. Try undoing the engine pipe! If no go, you probably have put the cam timing out 1 or 2 teeth.

If the cam chain is out by one tooth, a Series III will start easily, idle beautifully and be gutless.

If it was 2 teeth out, it would probably struggle to pull the skin off a rice pudding.

As suggested, if you have checked everything obvious, the most likely problem is the camshaft is mistimed. Other possibilities, which you should have already found would be a blocked main jet, or the ignition timing is really out, perhaps due to a problem with the timing marks, or a couple of plug leads swapped.

    Hi,

Had the same prob with an engine (VW type 3) years ago that I'd rebuilt with the tutelage of my grandfather, who knew his shiz. Had all the symptoms of a vacuum leak............ which was a very time consuming cause to eliminate.

In my case the engine was timed statically and was way out. Did you do the timing statically or use a timing light?

Hi I am going back now to when I raced 2.286 petrol engines,
We fitted the Diesel Cam (higher lift) and plained the cyl head
the easy mistake to make is to fit the timing chain without it being exactly rite, ie one tooth more is advanced one tooth less is retarded, if you take the gear off the cam and try all 4 ( from memory ) possitions you will set the timing exactly and not to the nearest tooth
    hope this helps
