Mine seems only to lock up in 4th, at a bit over 80k/h.
Hi All,
Can you tell me please, whether the 300Tdi ZF auto has converter lock-up in 3rd and 4th or only in 4th?
What's the recommendation of regular caravan towers - tow in 3rd or 4th? With a Jatco auto in another vehicle, I always tied to tow in 3rd locked rather then 4th with slip.
Thanks,
Ian
PS: Hi to all the regulars. Haven't been on here for some time - too much stuff going on...

This is something I'v wondered about.... how do you actually know when it's locked up?
Matt
Yep the 300Tdi auto only locks up in 4th around 80km/h.
You know it's locked as the revs will drop by around 500rpm, and it will sort of feel like another gear.
When you slow down to below 80ish km/h, the revs will pick up again and it feels like you have sort of changed down a gear.
The Td5 auto locks in 3rd and 4th, and I believe the 300Tdi auto can be modified to do the same.
i was worried it might be something like that... kind of hard to distinguish between gears and lock up! When I am at 100km/h I am doing about 2100rpm sound about right?
Yeah sounds right.
When it's locked it's not as responsive to throttle input.
It won't lock if you're giving a lot of throttle.
Related... does anyone know if there is a manually operated locker kit so you can get full engine braking when going down steep descents?
Just accelerate gently and count the gear changes: 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, then watch the speed at around 80km/h and you'll see the revs drop right off and feel a kind of surge as it locks up.
Slow down below 80km/h and you will feel it unlock and then speed back up above 80 and it will lock again.
It's quite noticeable when you know what you're looking for.
You can also tell if lockup is achieved by fitting a digital temp guage on the transmission cooler outlet pipe. When lockup is acheived you will see a drop in temp of around one degree every couple of seconds and 20-30c lower temps overall.
This is said to be due to better flow (200psi) through the cooler during lockup.
This also explains why you should drop into low range if possible when towing up really steep stuff or in soft sand. I have driven 25km in sand in low range and the gearbox temp sat between 50 - 60c, once I went into high range the temp climbed above 100c within a few minutes which proves the theory.
BTW. Manuel Autos in Thomastown Victoria can carry out a valve mod to get the ZF 4HP-22 to lockup in 3rd but not cheap and similar to a full rebuild at around 4k when I enquired.
Cheers
Mark
