    Replacement 300tdi sump plug

Do you have to buy a bolt specific to Land Rover or is there a generic sized bolt that will fit? I am about to drop the oils in both the Disco and Defender and want to use a new bolt and washer.

Why replace the sump plugs, unless they are damaged. I have always used thread tape on the original plugs, including gearboxes and diffs and never had an oil leak from the plug.

Replacing the copper washer is the correct method by design, but IMHO there is no need.

Having said that, the Puma sump required a new plug each time, due to the unusual Oring design

    Hey Erich,
I had a bit of a drama with my last oil change in the Disco and have always worried about that plug hence wanting to change it. The defender can be accounted for by my obsessive complusive traits .

    Erich,
would you suggest using a copper washer each time?
I've been using fibre washers but I'm having no issues with leaks.

Hi Tom, that is up to you, Land Rover recommend a new copper washer every service at 20,000kms intervals (12,000 miles by the book). I can't see a problem with fibre washers as long as they aren't over tightened and as long as they don't leak.

Our D2 had 1 new copper washer in 200,000kms, with a service every 10 - 15,000kms, depending on circumstances. Never had a sump plug oil leak. Always used Caltex synthetic oil as well
