I'd bet they got the gear ratio on the dyno wrong. This (incorrectly) magnifies the torque figures. Unfortunately some people beleive it.
It's quite a common mistake, I've met muppets who think they have 1000Nm landcruiser because of it.
Real figures, if he is 40% up on stock power then he's probably 40% up on stock torque too. Expect low to mid 400's for torque.

not sure it would hold together long doing it but it would do it at least once.
there were reports of td5's reliably running 500NM, the early pumas only gave up one pot and just a little under 100cc to them.. If you dont mind sacrificing run time the td5, (on paper) is capable of 800ish Nm (limited by the injectors flow rate)
With common rail thats no longer a limit, if you can cram enough air in you can inject and burn fuel from <TDC all the way down to >BDC

Thanks dougal ...I was starting to think there may be something weird going on as I am sitting here trying to figure out how they managed to get enough air to burn the fuel taken to produce those figures and I doubt just changing compressor and turbine wheel is going to cut it....
Changing a turbo won't do squat,people seem to think there's a magic bullet in turbo's but the air still has to get through the inlet system to the head,past the valves,back out through another set of valves and out the exhaust,by changing one part you are just moving the problem to the next bottleneck,or restriction,thats not even looking at the 20 other things an engine needs to run. YepI find the mags funny how the nissota owners get in there saying about there heaps good turbo and there heaps high exhaust temps at around 550* etc etc where I've frequently pushed out 800+ (not that that's good) its also amusing one article mentioned a td42 running high boost (16psi)
and then it stuffed the fuel pump
I shook my head and thought a $15 CAV would have fixed the problem !!!
