hydrogen output of battery when charging

i'm about to start installing my duel battery system in my disco 2, i have to install the battery in the rear cargo locker as there is not enough room under the bonnet, i have been advised that when batteries are being charge they give off hydrogen, has anyone come up with a solution to getting the hydrogen produced out of the cabin or is this not an issue as the amounts are minimal, i have 3 small kids so not real keen on putting them at any risk if it is a risk.

A "normal" wet cell battery should be fitted in a vented case, so the gases can easily escape outside. Then there's the possibility of acid spill, too. Otherwise find a fully sealed gel cell and make sure it's not overcharged.

Some wet cell batteries come with a special vent hose to run outside the vehicle.

Sorry, I can't help there. I just Googled "Discovery 2 dual battery" to find those.

If you put a battery in the rear compartment, you will need thick cables to minimise voltage drop. My second battery is in the rear compartment (under floor in the spare wheel well) but it is a sealed AGM battery.

If its going inside the vehicle just get a fully sealed battery (eg AGM). You don't have to worry about gasses, or acid inside the car.

Hi Travelin Soldier, the battery you have is fine and you do NOT need to vent it to the outside of the cab.

It is completely safe if ANY battery vents inside a cab, it’s nothing but an old wife's tale that you can not mount a flooded wet cell battery inside the cab of a vehicle and there are more than two dozen makes of NEW vehicles that have their cranking battery inside the cab or in the boot, such as Commodore.

You DO need to mount ALL batteries, not just a flooded wet cell batteries in a plastic battery box, as posted earlier, to protect against spillage.

    From the ADRs:

    7.7 BATTERIES
7.7.1 Batteries are to be secured and placed in a container suitable for the purpose of holding a battery. The battery must be positioned outside of the passenger
compartment unless it is in an enclosure that is vented to the outside of the passenger compartment. A dry type battery may installed inside the passenger compartment.
7.7.2 Battery terminals and wiring must be positioned so that there can be no accidental shorting to ground of the live terminal. The battery leads are to be secure and kept away from rotating components, fuel system components, and exhaust systems.
7.7.3 Fusible links between the battery and powered components are highly recommended.

    So there you have it.....
