    plastic jerry cans

    Hi all .
Many years ago I bought 4 water plastic jerrys 3 were white plastic and 1 was green plastic . Years on the green one is still like new as far as soft poly if that makes sense . The three others have all suffered cracks at some stage after the plastic hardened and cracked .
Im now to buy three replacements and I like the look of the construction on the yellow diesel ones seen in most supply shops .
Id like to buy three and throw a bit of green paint on the fronts . The regular water ones I can find are still white plastic and I dont wish to buy them again .
Anyone know if the yellow ones will have any downside for drinking water .

Besides the fact that they're marked "DIESEL" none that i know of!
Could make for some embarrassing mix ups though

Any disposal store should have ex-army water jerrys , don't get much better than that, Bob

The white stuff does not like sunlight, like zip ties, white for indoors and black for outside. I have a green jerry over thirty years service and perfect except the white screw caps went hard and cracked in pieces long ago. Never mind, they are standard bottle closure thread and some fossicking about soon found replacements.

    Hi there.
I make home bru and always use food grade containers.
I reckon one could get pretty bad chemical contamination using the diesel containers you mention.
I would not try it personally.

    Hi,
you can 'recondition' the white plastic ones with boiling water every year or so, but do keep them out of direct sunlight.

For proof of the concept, take a piece of plastic that has shattered from a white poly bottle and pour boiling water over it and allow to cool.

It should be as pliable as new.

    cheers

I have two of the yellow plastic diesel jerries you're asking about, which have never been used for diesel, only water .... for the last 15+yrs ... no problems. They are quite solid and heavy walled. Both have a small cap one end/side & a large cap the other side, and one has a 3/4 bung on the narrow side at the base to fit a 3/4" drum tap to.

I always store them full of water, and empty & refill before a trip ... no one yet has complained about the taste of the water (wife/kids), but they complain about water stored in a plastic coke bottle for a few weeks and won't drink it, so I'm guessing they're not tainting the water much (if at all)

... and sorry, I don't recall ever seeing a brand name on them, but if you want I can check.

Why muck about? Just use what the Army uses. I've used something like the picture that Ron put up, buy they started cracking as well. The Army-style ones haven't, and a couple of them are about 15 years old now. Water Containers & Accessories » Jerry Cans & Water Containers » Pro Quip

One funny thing, though. Most of mine are exactly the same as the Army has, with smooth sides, and they were new, not surplus. This one in the picture has a weird, rough surface, for some bizarre reason, and the shape at the top is slightly different. But they're still good, and don't crack in the sun.
