Keys cut by VIN or Key code?

I've got two new OE Valeo keys for my Disco which need to be cut. Rather than being cut off a worn key I was hoping to get them cut from code.

Locksmith reckons the VIN is of no use to him - he needs the key code. Is this something a dealer is likely to still have on record for a 15 year old Disco?

Absolutely. Done it myself with much older vehicles. If by some freak of nature they don't the code will be engraved, albeit extremely tiny, on the lock barrels. You may have to go into the dealer with reg papers to prove it's yours but for older cars they normally give the code over the phone.

just a side note, you may be better off having them cut from the worn key, i've had troubles with keys cut from code and worn barrels.

Remove the bottom shroud and look around the locking mechanism of the steering column. I found my 4 digit key code on a sticker there.
