    Demineralised or distilled for radiator

    Hi all,
    Am about to change the radiator fluid and was wondering if either distilled or demineralised water is better for the radiator/engine.

    Normally change the fluid every year if not every two years.

    Have been using just tap water the last two fills.(not sure what the mechanics use when he has had to drain the radiator. )

    In your locality, tank or tap water should be fine - tap water will have only smallest amounts of lime dissolved in it.... AFAIK lime is the component that you do not want in it. It will be interesting to read the comments of later contributirs to this.

    I doubt that you'll have any problems at all with Sydney water. I never gave that a second thought when I lived there.

    BUT my core is now 12 years old with a rodding at 11 years and no blockage, using distilled/demineralised water and Nulon Longlife every 2 years.
    I don't think there would be many around with that record using tap water.
    For an outlay of $10 , IMHO it is worth the distilled/demineralised.

    Please ONLY ever use demineralised water in cooling systems. Town water has a LOT of minerals in it that causes harm to certain inhibitors/raw materials that are put in coolant to protect your engine, which in turn will wear them down faster and start causing damage to your internal cooling components. It also causes scale build up on all internal surfaces of the cooling system, which drastically reduces the cooling efficiency. That is it in a nut shell, i am happy to go into more details if necessary.

    I know this as i am an automotive coolant blender/manufacturer, and i know exactly what goes into virtually all the different coolants on the market.

    As a blender/manufacturer-what would u recommend for 200 and 300tdi.
    I normally use Castrol inhibitor concentrate.

    What is the difference between de-mineralised and distilled water??

    I thought that the end product was basically the same.

    I think the end result and effects are the same.

    What is the difference between demineralized water and distilled water

    I would only use a coolant at 50% dilution, as turbo diesels create a lot of heat compared to petrol engines. As for the particular coolant, there is a large range that is suitable. Without going through all of them, any OAT based coolant is safe (Repco Organic LL, any Nulon OAT). There is plenty more but i'd have to go through each one individually.

    If you tell me exactly what Castrol coolant you are using i could tell you if its fine to use (there is several that have corrosion inhibitor properties), as there is a few that contain Silicates, Phosphates etc, which aren't good for alloy components. I make coolant for Repco, Caltex, Fuchs, John Deere, Ford, Mack, Volvo, Calibre, etc etc, so if there is any specific ones people want to know about i am happy to talk.

    I'm infected with a 1995 Classic, 3.9 V8 (all alloy engine, apart from the cast iron liners...) Done approx 170,000 km.

    Radiator was 'cleaned' before I bought it, have had no overheating issues to speak of, though I remain suspicious of the original radiator...

    Heater matrix is bypassed now, due to connecting pipes corroded beyond salvage.- It never leaked anyway.

    Currently filled with Nulon (green) glycol full-strength and diluted to 50% with de-mineralised water.

    Suggestions Please.
