    200tdi big ends

Hi is it possible to check/replace the bigends on an auto Disco 200 tdi without taking the engine out? I would to do this job in the coming weekend if I can as there is a faint knock that we can hear and I'm trying to be 'proactive'. And yes we can definately hear a different noise under the rest of the clatter.

    Thanks, Jack

yes, drop the sump and from underneath uncap the bigends then do a plasitgauge check, if the plasitgauge shows loose enough you can then do the nip check as well.

    Alternatively

sump off head off unbolt the big ends pull the pistons out do all the checks on the piston, pot and big end then re-assemble.

you can replace everything but the, crank, rear main and seal without pulling the block out of the engine bay.

Thanks for the quick reply, but I had read that the ladder frame inbetween the block and the sump got in the way and has bolts into it horizontaly from the bell housing? But other forums say what you said!

    Is that right?
I understood you had to separate the engine from the box to remove the alloy stiffener plate thing before you could get to the bigends.
I would like to check mine but was put off by having to pull the donk.

Posted same time as jacknz. same thoughts but.

    depends on your luck.

The last one I did only had 2 inhex bolts mounting the bottom of the ladder to the bell housing from the sump side.

A quick web search shows about 50/50 that the bolts are even in in the first place.

Even if they are in there, you might get lucky and by pulling 4 of the bell housing bolts/studs and installing long guides you might be able to get the bolts freed up without pulling the engine.

Having just been through a V8 rebuild with engine out of the Disco, but having also worked through the engine bay and under sides on other cars to do similar works I'd much prefer the hassle of pulling an engine to do things comfortably and cleanly. Certainly check the bearings with the sump dropped off, but if you find anything sinister going on I'd bit the bullet and pull the engine. Even with my engine on a stand in the garage, getting the bearings sorted out was near enough a full day's work because all of the mains and rod shells needed end work to achieve proper crush fit in their respective caps.

    consulted the parts manual...

theres supposed to be 4 socket head screws holding the flywheel housing to the ladder.

Done my 200TDI mains/bigends/pump recently,(all from underneath !) at 380,000 K still good as new ! Problem was rear cam bearing dislocation, leads to no oil pressure at idle ! Make sure you have quality 15mm socket ! Knocking noise is usually is failed valve lash adjusters , valve adjustment, power check the injectors one at a time engine running ,the knock will come and go .
Ps this pre-supposes you dont have the 200TDI timing gear/loose harmonic balancer disease !
