External regulator wiring
Hi all,
I am wiring an external regulator into a friend's car but am having some issues with the charge light.
This is actually for a 1982 diesel Hilux but I figure this sort of info is fairly generic.
The engine bay has been under water when it flooded out here so as you can imagine the original points regulator was stuffed. The car runs and has no issues it didn't already have other than the regulator is no longer regulating.
Essentially I have fitted the Bosch external regulator and removed the points regulator and it is now charging fine but the charge light doesn't work anymore. I have wired a couple of these in my own cars over 10 years ago but never worried about the charge light then. However I'd like to get it working this time as it isn't my own dodgy car.
The factory regulator had these markings in the workshop manual.
Ig - Ignition
N - Neutral/stator
F - Field
E - Earth
L - Charge light
B - Battery
The alternator plug has these markings
E
N
F
The Bosch regulator has these markings
D+ - Ignition
F+ - Field
The regulator is connected D+ to ignition and F+ to the alternator F.
The workshop manual has a wiring diagram in it and I have connected the following using the diagram
Alternator F to regulator F+ as above
Alternator E to earth (inner guard)
B to battery (alternator output stud) (this makes no difference if it is connected or not)
L to ignition
N is not connected
So if you are still with me, I have everything connected except N which from the diagram I don't believe I need to connect to anything with the solid state regulator in use.
I can get the charge light to light up if the ignition is off and I connect +12v to the L terminal so I know the bulb works.
Having a bit of a look online I think I may need to connect the L to the F terminal?
Not sure and can't check as I am home now.
Also and this might be unrelated but the owner thinks the glow plugs/relay has stopped working since we did this however the circuit diagram for the alternator makes no mention of being related to the glow plug circuit. Maybe just coincidence but if anyone knows otherwise I'm all ears.
Thanks

D+ terminal is your warning light terminal, gives a 12v output when the alternator is charging and the warning light goes out. If the alt stops charging this becomes a negative and your warning light will come on as there is ign 12v on the other side of the globe.

Thanks. That is what the manual said and is how I have connected it.
So I will have to play further.
Haven't had a chance to go back yet and have another look at it.
