    defender steering box

    Hi Team

    Just back from the Gulf and Arnhem Land and my steering is very slack.. All balljoints are 10,000 km old and no slack. The steering box is a three bolt one and I'[ve adjusted it up as far as it will go but the steering is all over the place. I have a defender four bolt box which I assume is a straight swap. Is the four bolt box better than the three or would it be better to get the three reconditioned. The four bolt box appears to have almost no slack (still in a spare defender I have. Any advice welcomed as always. Thanks.

    A silly question, but is the slack in the steering box ?

    When i bought my Defender (4 bolt box) the owner said 'needs a new steering box, there's too much slack in the steering'. And there was far too much slack in the steering, 50% of it was in a loose pinch bolt in one of the uni splines in the shaft that goes to the steering box. The other 50% was in the collapsed replaceable ball joint on the bottom of the drop arm. The previous owner had wound up the adjusting screw on top of the steering box way too far, it was binding quite severely. I actually backed it off 1 1/2 turns.
    The Panhard bush bolts were also worn (the bushes were actually OK) which added to the sloppy steering. If you park on a hard surface and move the steering wheel side to side (from outside the car) whilst lining up the mudguard and a point on the ground and the mudguard moves then the Panhard bushes or bolts may be giving you steering slack.

    Thanks Deano - Drop arm ball joint only 10k old, no slack in the two unis on the steering rod to box. will check the bolts and bushes There is a knock in the shaft to the pitman arm. Is the 4 bolt a direct replacement for the 3 bolt and is the 4 bolt a better box than the three.
