    Mini Spool VS Spool

I know what a spool is (locks both axles together - all the time) but what is a mini spool? I have heard it explained that a mini spool locks the spider gears but is this correct? Is there an advantage of one over the other?
Has any one used either on a 4wd.
I am contemplating using one in the rear of a light short wheel base vehicle that I plan to run mostly off road.(I still will have to drive on pavement to get to my destinations) The vehicle has 2wd / 4wd selector and free wheeling front hubs, so not worried about driveline wind up. I know that I will have tyre chirp around corners, and possibly increased tyre wear and handling may suffer. I am more worried about the possibility of the backend trying to meet the front in slippery wet conditions on road.
The other option is going for an auto locker.

Locked diffs are very hard to live with on the street. You will find out the first time you have to turn at low speed as into a parking space.Much cornering with them involves power sliding as in dirt track speedway.

Detroit lockers are a far better fitment for street cars.

Even in straight-line driving, any difference in rear wheel circumference, i.e. from wear, will be trying to drive you off the side of the road. There's a reason why cars have had diffs since the earliest times.

Not that bad at all, quite Driveable

As Brian said, tight turns and parking etc

Full spool replaces the whole guts the crown wheel bolts onto, mini spool inserts inside to have the same effect, but reliant on the crosspin, not good in a rover

Like any illegal drag/ street racer/burn-out wally ,run 50 psi on the street and 15 psi on the strip. Wouldnt bother spooling any type of Rover Diff . A 9 inch with ARB locker would be the best !

Yes, I think they would be a bit of a buggar on the street. If a trailer queen or comp rig would consider a full spool. I may end up driving it more on the street than I think I will.
I will most likely go with an auto locker like a detroit or powerlock as I am too lazy to play with switches and would rather concentrate on my driving than if I should or not engage a locker - will be going into a Dana 44.

I think you'll find that using a locked diff on the street is illegal in every Australian jurisdiction.

    You are correct,
I did a bit of research on vehicle mods and found exactly that, spools are not allowed for road registered cars.
Looks like a locker it will be.

energy to flick two switches?? from memory i have always mustered enough energy....and always had plenty of time to decide if i need to flick the switches

the previous owner of my rig took on the cost of installing my air lockers, if i had the need to install now i think i would go with an autolocker based on the cost difference
