I was at KLR Auto this arvo and Brad showed me a broken lift pump removed from a 300Tdi. The new customer had the car delivered there as it's broken two pumps in the past two weeks. The car had been serviced elsewhere by a non-LR mechanic.
The end of the lever up inside the pump had snapped off on both. They'd broken the same day they'd been fitted. We can't think of any reason why they'd break the operating lever that is driven by the cam.
He's never seen that before so he's a bit apprehensive. I don't blame him. If it breaks another, who covers the costs (rhetorical question, really.)
He said the pumps that had been fitted by the other mechanic look OE but didn't come in LR boxes. I do know which brand.
Has anyone else had the lever snap on a pump?

Ron, if you are talking about the 2 replacement pumps breaking, then I would compare the pump lever travel of the original pump with the 2 broken ones also the length of the levers.
I remember years back a mate of mine was having trouble with breaking fuel pump levers (on a ford V8). Problem was that there was a spacer between the pump mounting face and the block, which had fallen off when he removed the original pump. When he put the new (Ford) pump on without the spacer he broke 2 before he realised the spacer was missing, does the LR have a spacer? Regards Frank.
No spacer, just rubbish quality as far as i can see

Hi Frank, I remember the spacers. I think they were fibre to stop heat being transferred from the block to the pump in the hope it would mitigate vapour lock.

Justin, do you really want a replacement from the same supplier?
The problem with rubbish parts is the extra labour cost involved. Unless the customer says he wants the cheaper part, the mechanic probably has to wear the labour. However, it doesn't do the mechanic's reputation any good. Customers will always be quick to blame the mechanic (jeez, I do!).
I won't buy parts now unless I get them from LR Aust or I can be sure they are OE or better. Too many problems with aftermarket stuff.
I was talking to Bruce Davis (Davis Performance Landys) about this a couple of years ago and he won't fit non-genuine or better as he can't afford to have a failure and return.

Easy throw the lift pump in the bin and use a electric fuel pump in place![]()
There are other options available from suppliers too, OEM, or genuine or dash R are all worth considering, sometimes the 'r' parts are good ones from Delphi or similar, so it is always worth asking the brand/manufacturer when ordering equivalent bits. I'll be ringing them today...
Bruce is right on there, I agree totally NOONE can afford to be doing jobs twice due to faulty parts. Certainly the customer shouldn't pay, except of course if THEY supply the parts, which is something I make clear if they do that. My warranty covers workmanship and parts supplied by me.
