TD5 transplant from Defender to D2a?

My 04 D2a TD5 of six months ownership with 153K of only on road running dropped its bundle. Never been driven in anger but turbo, front piston and exhaust? valve issues I'm told.

Well, after 2 weeks of fluffing around, and finally taking the head off, the decision has been made. As I want to keep the wee beastie for at least 10 years and have already done some touring type mods we are going for a transplant. A new, or remanufacturered engine would really stretch the pension.

Have just scored a 37K military spec version from a rear ended defender (don't yet know the age, but assuming younger than mine) as an exchange and with all the bits on - all we have to do now is get it extracted and sent from the east and then send mine back after. It does come with 12 months warranty!!

I also have a few minor bits (like water pump, oil cooler, oil filter adapter, all hoses and injector harness) I've literally just replaced last month, so will want to keep them where possible/economic.

    Questions

I'm hoping being military that regular maintenance would have been done?

I'm assured its a straight forward swap - but?

I have a stage 1? remap - no problems? (I do have the file saved on my pc, thanks to Jose at TD5Inside)

Anything else to get the worry beads out over?
    Let the discussion commence.
    Cheers Gavin

Its like Tombie said, easy swap...

There are one or two bits that need to be changed - most regarding EGR and oil cooler, but its easy.

Regarding the inside map file, drop me an email and I´ll be more than glad to retouch your map file or even do a new one for the new engine if needed (if it is EU2 because of the injectors pressure) free of charge.

    Regards!

    Military Spec TD5

One thing I forgot to ask - are there any differences, significant or otherwise in a military spec TD5 engine?

Many thanks for the supporting responses so far.
    Jose - you are brilliant.
All - I will find out age/status of engine and post.

Nothing other than it was in an engine bay was painted.green so may have some.green overspray on it and its probably been driven like a hire car.

Thanks Dave - was hoping you might chip in.
At only 37K, I'm hoping it won't have been worn out by the hire car driver mentality - can't be much worse than a cossetted one giving up at 153K. AND - I would hope it was maintained correctly.
I know what you mean, but a surprisingly high percentage of hirers actually look after their cars.

From an earlier post - a most disappointing situation.

My 04 D2a TD5 of six months ownership with 153K of only on road running dropped its bundle. Never been driven in anger but turbo, front piston and exhaust? valve issues I'm told.

I haven't pestered Franzone for a couple of days to get more details since the head came off (so they can get on with earning a living) but basically turbo gave up, spewed engine oil into exhaust pipe and back into the engine (luckily no oil combustion/runon [Blacknight - a well known Perth 4WD person told me he actually had it happen to him not far from Karijini National Park]). One of my valves in the front cylinder was then stuffed, but don't have any other details as yet.

I've also yet to call again to find out the age of the new donor engine.

Somewhat depressing and the round OZ retirement trip now won't be quite as grand.

Hi Jose (and Tombie) - the donor TD5 engine is an EU3 about 2004 (same era as my original) so hopefully all will be OK. Hopefully has been well maintatined and at 37K not flogged to death by our wonderful grunts. Its still in Sydney waiting to be extracted and trucked over due to a backlog, so I'm at least a fortnight away from being mobile again and getting back to do some work.
Franzone in East Perth (my normal people) are doing the work and know about ECU/injectors etc. John used to own a well kitted D2.
Even though the donor is a complete engine, we will also be changing over/keeping the new bits I just put on a few weeks ago (water pump, injector harness, oil cooler and adapter, all new hoses throughout).
Hopefully not too much else to go wrong???
