Thread: Diff dents

Jeff, can't help with the problem. Extending my sympathies for the damage.

To clarify your comment: Are you saying the crown is rubbing on the cover creating shavings OR you fear that's what is happening based on the dent?

Diff guards high on the agenda now? "Solid" make a salisbury diff pan (dana 60). I saw them on US Ebay for USD65 the other week. Any of the UK parts distributors sell the front diff protection for about GBP35. You lose an inch of clearance, but gain comfort.

Unless you are sure it is rubbing, I would not be too concerned - the main concern is whether it is leaking now or wears a hole (keep an eye on it). Any shavings off the housing will be softer than any of the wearing surfaces, and small enough not to be a serious problem, although changing the oil would give peace of mind.

I wouldn't bother trying to straighten the Sals cover even as a temporary measure, mine distorted just prying it from the cork gasket. I wasn't all that gentle though...

I caved mine in fairly badly on my old Defer, that one did have the crownwheel rubbing on the cover

As you can see from my photos this is how bad the dent has to be for it to rub

Jack the vehicle up and rotate the wheels and listen to see if there is any noise from the Crown wheel contacting the housing,if there isn't,and it isn't leaking,then don't worry,just buy a couple of diff covers.Don't buy one of those that go under the diff.They just decrease your ground clearance and are known to crack.And as far as the Solis Industries cover for the Salisbury goes,they won't ship to Australia,so you would have to ship to a U.S. address and have it forwarded on from there.
There are plenty of more options out there though.
