    Winch Servicing

G'day all, what are people doing when it comes to servicing their winches. From cable cleaning/lube to servicing the motor?

If it is a Warn, then call Malcolm Leslie, SG Leslie & Sons, 19 Mologa Road West Heidelberg 03 9459 2859. Presume he'd do other brands also.

    Swearing, lots...

a minor service is a wind out of the wire (or the rope) clean (and lube for wire) (and dry for synth) retorque the mounting bolts, inspect the electrics (grease points for mech PTO) (inspect the lines and fluid res level for hydraulic PTO) check top up the oil on oil fed gear units + PTOs. No load function check, bottom layer pull load check, 100KG pull wind on.

Major service gets a fluid change for oils and a grease check for an electric winch if an electric is giving any hints of trouble or has been used heavily then the end of the motor comes off for a brush/commutator check

Alt Major gets a full pull down and inspect.

    Minor is 6 monthly/after use
major is 12/24monthly depending on use
alt major is 24 monthly-5 yearly depending on use

Just do it yourself rather than paying someone...there are copies of the manuals for Warn servicing and many of the 4wd mags do run downs. Its really not that hard, just put it back together the way you found it.

I have torn down my warn a couple of times and a couple of cheaper brands however, and I must say the warn is easier to reassemble. The tolerances and build quality of the others make it difficult sometimes with the gear assemblies. That said, there isnt that much between them in terms of construction.

Cheere fellas, I unrolled the cable today and cleans and oiled it. Looks like new. After discovering the amount of heat in the wiring I have thicker cables to fit in order to conduct better.

I've found that leaving mine in it's original box in the front room keeps it in pristine condition...
