    R380 Gearbox Oil Leak

I have a L series R380 in a 2004 130 - and there is an oil leak from the transfer case. Has been there for a while but its getting worse. Originally suspected the bottom plate on the transfer case but am convinced the leak is from further up.

Have seen a few comments on here suggesting that it is likely to be coming from a failed O ring where the selectors slide into the top of the box.

Are these O rings accesible with the gearbox in place? Or do I have to remove the box to fix them?

    Thanks

I recall the post you're talking about. You do not have to remove the TC for that one. However, the other defender owner had pics that proved it was that particular o-ring in the shifter extension. For you, it will be a case of giving the lot a bath and then taking the tunnel cover off and making sure the leak is coming all the way from the top of the box - and is ATF (If you run that in the gearbox) The other common leak you may encounter (which is not repairable in situ) is the intermediate shaft o-rings. Search that phrase (either here or web) and you'll get heaps of info.

If it is the transfer case intermediate shaft Orings or the input seal leaking, then yes it will have to come off the box to be repaired. Either way, replace input seal also (ICV1000010) for the transfer case and the output seal for the R380 when replacing the intermediate shaft O rings..
