TDC & EF Markings on Crank Damper

Inspecting the timing belt on a 200tdi. The timing appears to be ok but I'm being super cautious, this being the first time I've looked.

    - The woodruff key is at 12'oclock
    - The locking pin fits nicely in the FIP hole
    - The little dot on the top center gear is in line with the marking on the timing case. (rocker timing?)
    - The locking pin is in the flywheel housing and locked.

But with the crank damper on, the TDC marking is at 2'oclock and a marking labeld EF is at 11'oclock. I was expecting the TDC marked one to be at 11.

    Whats the deal with that?

The outer ring on the Dampner, with the timing marks, is laminated to the inner section by a rubber ring. This ring can wear and allow the outer section to rotate.
Grab the outer section and clamp the inner and see if you can move it rotationally.
You could also rotate the engine again and make sure you are on the compression stroke of #1, check when everything is aligned, flywheel and crank snout keyway, etc, that #1 valves are fully closed, Regards Frank.

outer ring does not seem to move.

Rotated engine a few times and valves on #1 closest to front of engine bay are closed (not being pushed down). Everything lines up except that the EF marking on damper is in line with timing cover plate indicator and not the one marked TDC. If the damper is flipped and put on backwards then TDC mark is in correct place... Perhaps it was marked the wrong way or the the outer rim went on backwards... I should just get on with it right?

If everything else is lined up and the rockers on #1 have clearance (you can click them up and down) then everything should be fine, BUT I would be getting a new dampner, Regards Frank.

Genuine dampers for 200tdi are rare and expensive, britpart ones are about £40 but I don't like the idea of a britpart damper sitting on my crank.

    Part no: ERR751

i suppose the outer part on mine must have slipped but its odd that the other 'EF' marking on there lines up perfectly. Any idea what EF stands for?
