Unhappy I may have a slipped liner..... 3.9 V8.What are the symptoms?

I have a Landrover Discovery V8 3.9 with 200,00km on the clock. The motor is great with heaps of power.I had a new cam put in 4,000km ago and it made a big difference.I havent driven the car in months and decided to take it to work today.I had driven it around during those few months but only around the block and when i was checking everything on it.

The car has NEVER OVERHEATED and runs a VDO temp gauge to monitor the water temp.I filled up with fuel this morning and drove to work.Everything was going just great. My problem began when i left work.I was about 15 min from work when i floored it to merge into a lane and then thats when it happened.

It made a terrible noise like something was knocking on the rocker cover.I pulled over to have a listen and it was like metal was hitting the top of the motor. Or even a really bad exhaust leak.First thing i thought was slipped liner. The noise seem to be from the passenger side of the motor.I ended up driving it home still but very slowly.Jeez did it make some noise.I wasnt revving it hard just basically idling it home. The car also sounds like its idling on 7 cylinders now.And when i rev it you can smell fuel from the exhaust along with a fair bit of black smoke.

My questions are is it most likely a slipped liner?
Do they just go like that for no apparent reason?
Could it be a bottom end bearing?
Could that fuel i filled up with this morning have anything to do with it?

I just dont know. After leaving the motor to cool down the sound seem to have disappeared and would only come back a little higher in the rev range. If i get time tomorrow i will try and record the sound. If it is a slipped liner i think it might be the end of my Landrover ownership. I really hope its not.

    Any help would be great.
    Thanks
    Chris

Chris, I'd start with trying to isolate the noise by using a stethoscope or just a metal bar to my ear. If inconclusive isolate the dud cylinder by progressively shorting each ignition lead. Then test compression in that cylinder. Then inspect the valve gear to rule out a broken/bent valve or pushrod/rocker. I guess after that things get deeper and if compression is down the head needs to come off to investigate further.

Slipped liners generally cause all the coolant to blow out as the block behind has cracked. Doesn't sound like that in your case. More likely a bent pushrod or a stripped rocker shaft bolt. Relatively easy to fix in the vehicle. Also worth pulling all the plugs and looking for a damaged/oiled one to identify the missing cylinder.

Ok i started the Disco after i got home to see what it would be like when it was cold. Its definitely running on about 7 cylinders and i can smell fuel out the exhaust. The noise only came up when i revved it and it definitely sounds like a knocking sound. It hasnt lost any coolant and there is no change in the oil level.

I havent had a chance to pull out the spark plugs yet to see if it is oily.I'll probably do that on the weekend. If it is a rocker shaft bolt or bent push rod does the head have to come off for it to be fixed? And is this a common fault for this to just happen like that? There were no signs of it running badly prior to this.

Rocker cover needs to come off once you work out which cylinder is faulty, then have a look for damage. The head probably won't need to come off, but you will find out soon enough when you look.

Thanks for that bee utey.I'll find out which cylinder it is soon enough and then go from there.

Hi, Your symptom is identical to what I experienced.Sounds like same noise.
Mine was a slipped liner. No other problem apart from the noise and we continued our trip further 13000Km before having fixed. Used stepped liners.
    Cheers

Did yours drop a cylinder when it happened or lose any water? Thanks

My slipped liner experiences have been no noise at all when cold ranging to a tappet like ticking when hot on my Disco and the same on my P6, except the ticking turned into a nasty rattle (3500).

Sounds as if something else is wrong if one cylinder is not burning fuel,

    Cheers Charlie

When mine had those symptoms, a pad had come off the bottom of one off the rockers. It dropped to 7 cylinders and had a nice loud knock sound.

    Cheers
