    td5 air con evaporator

I have been sifting through the posts here but am unable to find a guide to getting the evaporator out of the dash in a td5 defender.

I have replaced the compressor (bad clutch) receiver, and had it tested for leaks, but apparently the evaporator is what is leaking.

I am following the instructions in the service manual, but can't get the lower dash detached to get to the evaporator.

I detached the pipes under the hood, and have removed all the screws from the ac part of the dashboard.

I know it is attached at the bulkhead somehow but am going crazy trying to remove it.

Also, does anyone hve experience fitting an aftermarket evap? Even the all makes evap is very expensive. Thanks so much.

    Ben

Are you in the US ?

The Oz fitted a/c system was unique to here and we're RHD, so everything will be mirrored or just plain different on yours.

I have a right hand drive UK imported defender. I'm willing to take a chance as the other info I have gotten offof this forum for the ac has been spot on. As long as theunder the edash ac vents and evaporatoris mounted similarly, any info would be a great help.

OK, there's a bracket that spans the footwell and bolts through the bulkhead.

The nuts are under the heater box and are a right royal PITA to access.
There are also two nuts on either end of the U bracket inside the car, up in the footwell that are all but impossible to get to (it's a U shaped bracket)

Once they're out and all the screws and pipes are undone, the entire system will drop only so far, you then have to try and get the loom out.
On mine, everything was a continuous loom back to the relays in the battery box, there was no plug/s to disconnect it, so I just disconnected the supply to the relay in the BB and hit it the loom with sidecutters, then taped up the tails.

Bodgy, but I was out of time, I'm not re-installing this a/c system and it works.

Having said all that, how bad is the a/c leak ?

How much refrigerant is it dropping over how many weeks ?

If it's not super fast (IIRC less than 14% over three weeks) there is a much easier and more cost effective way to go

The shop filled it up to find the leak and the refrigerant was gone within 2 days.

    Sounds like a royal pita.
Once you had it apart you were able to replace the evap Thank you for the instructions, btw, im printing this.

How did you manage to get a Td5 Defender in North America, I didn't think they were NAS compliant ?

Even a good working Td5 Defender A/C is next to useless, To make my cooling almost noticeable I've insulated the firewall & underfloor, insulated the a/c cold pipes in the engine bay, exhaust wrapped the engine pipe,
Now the A/C is really good at making the passengers knees cold but still no good at cooling the car, esp in the bush where the front vents have to be open to pressurise the car to keep dust out.

Im thinking about one of these mounted in front of the cargo barrier
UD-550 Overhead Roof Mount Evaporator Unit - Roof & Floor Mount Evaporator Units

Probably the only way to fix a Td5 Defender A/C is to buy a Puma

On the Oz spec ones the ABS case is all riveted together, which is another PITA

Not NAS compliant. It is very tricky to import it..there are probably only a handful in the country.

I am familiar with the AC and its shortcomings, also think the overhead units are a great idea...I just want to get this working again!

@ Rick, I'm going to get it this weekend and will let you know if it is the same. I have a feeling it is pretty close from what I have seen so far.
