After reading your comments and noting your lack of mechanical knowledge I would suggest that you get your vehicle to a Mechanic, FYI the engine rotates Clockwise, if you do bar it over STOP the instant you feel the engine stop rotating or you may do more damage, Regards Frank.

Gee, Frank. If you could diagnose my 'lack of mechanical knowledge' so easily I'm surprised your clairvoyance can't tell me exactly what is wrong with my car!

Asking questions is often smarter than thinking you have all the answers.

    cheers

No clairvoyance involved, your own posts 1 and 6 shout to the world that you have no idea of what is happening, so I suggested you get your car to a mechanic before you do any more damage. I agree with the other posters that you probably have a blown head gasket and when you tried to start the engine you have tried to compress a cylinder or two with water in them. Which if it is so you may have caused some serious damage to pistons, rods or even the crank.
In this case you have stated in your posts that you have no mechanical knowledge and any further intervention by you will probably cause more damage so get off your high horse and don't blame me for your ****ing ignorance and lack of commonsense, Frank.

    Having a bad day Tank?

Take it easy mate, no need to get all personal, it's not your vehicle at risk.
I agree that the most likely explanation is hydraulic lock, but the OP didn't offer a detailed explanation of the type/ sound/ location of the clank/ clunk etc.

Dave, I offered info and get abused, he's the one that told us he had no Idea of what was going on, so I advised taking it to a mechanic, I pointed out the facts while he attacked me personally so I replied in kind, Regards Frank.

    Update

As suspected, head gasket problem and front cylinder was full of coolant! Hopefully no major damage as the engine only got a partial revolution before stopping on the in-compressible liquid.

Am going to put a new head on as the current one is a recon unit from a number of years ago.

Will also do water pump and the other items I have gleaned from posts elsewhere as preventative maintenance.

Thanks for the advice from all.

the starter does throw enough torque to damage the little and big end bearings.

I suggest that you also drop the sump and uncap the bearings for some MK I eyeballery..

    Without being offensive about it...

Incase tank is right and you dont have the savvy to do it get someone with buckets of knowledge to help you out. Screwing up a bearing inspection can result in that "Crap now I need a whole new engine" wallet rapery.
