    td5 oil light

How long does your TD5 oil pressure light take to go out on a cold start - i.e. after standing overnight? Mine stays one for about a second. Coming from the Disco 2 V8 I am not sure how long this should stay on - the V8 was really quick to go off. I had a look at a colleague's Defender TD5, and his was more or less the same.

If you restart it quickly after shutting down the light will go out immediately.

Sounds about right! mine is, and has been around that for years.

longest mine ever stayed on was after a filter change, then it would stay on for about 10 seconds while I cranked it on the starter.

normal startups would see oil pressure in around .5-1 seconds.

Ok... it still freaks me out seeing that light on for so "long" after startup (compared to the V8). I have not tried to measure how long the light stays on, but it's definitely more like a second, than less than a second.

@trev, @blacknight, @muppet - what oils are you running? I assume the oil (and especially the viscosity) will make a big difference in how long it takes the pump to "prime" on a restart.

If you reply to this post with a number, can you please also state the oil and viscosity please?

My indy uses Castrol Tection 15w40 in all the TD5s they service. In Cape Town (South Africa) it rarely goes below 5 degrees Celcius in winter.

If you are worried, for peace of mind you could get an engine oil pressure check done, the pressure is taken from the oil pressure switch connection, after removal of the switch . According to RAVE, at idle it should be 3 bar, or 43.5 psi.The low oil pressure switch opening pressure, is meant to be 0.2 to 0.6 bar,/ 3.0 to 8.8 psi. Bob

I am hoping to receive the required fittings today so I can install a separate VDO oil pressure sender for my existing EMS2 engine monitoring device. Will have a better idea of the oil pressure then.

Mine stays illuminated until start up, which from my reading of the book is what it should do.
I've had mine for 20k kms, never had an issue with it, and it had a fine tooth comb inspection by GC in sydney, still runs like a dream.
    I wouldn't worry about it

Yeah my td5's oil light also stays on until started - it is the time how long after it has been started that concern(ed) me.

Got all the bits to do the oil pressure sender installation today...
