I must add it appears no bent push rods or rockers and hopefully vavles![]()
Well after doing 60.000ks since the last belt , Which was done by a recomended good mechanic with a up date kit, Yesterday running around doing last minute jobs before i headed off for cup weekend i suffered a massive drop in Tdi perfomance
, Thinking Fuel filter replaced and no go
well after several hours of scratching my man hood i came up with the cause . Im guessing the round plastic thingy now chewed up by the belt is the old style belt guild for the bottom gear well its no more now ,
RoverLords too the rescue Thanks again Mario , Yes im doing it properly and by me this time![]()
I must add it appears no bent push rods or rockers and hopefully vavles![]()
if the lash adjustment is still all ok then youve only jumped about 3 teeth and installing a new belt with the one piece crank gear will see you right.

Well the belt is fairly looseIll set it all up and rotate the engine by hand a few times and make sure the timing marks all line up before it all goes back together

Seal or Bearing??? In the last photo is shows a crank seal for the front cover. A few weeks ago when I did my timing belt my timing cover has a metal bearing type of seal? Not sure if it needs replacing as it seemed ok at the time. Could be the source of a squeling sound when cold!!
Any thoughts.
chris, that plastic bit is the outside of the tensioner, It looks like it has split and fallen off, hence the loose belt. The tensioner should be a steel bearing with a bonded plastic outer.

That little paper washer adheres to the inside of the timing cover where one of the long bolts passes through, it is there to duplicate the thickness of the gasket around the outside, to prevent distortion of the cover when doing up bolts.

Always Happy to be of assistance young Chris
