Transfer case oil - should it look like this?

I just dropped the oil out of my T/C and the last half that drained was rather frothy - see pic.

Is it water contamination or just normal aeration?

The oil underneath looked and smelt normal.

I use castrol synmax 75/90, and the vehicle is a disco 2 auto.

to stop this happening again, even if you have extended breathers.

after a deep river crossing stop on the other side for an hour or so and then crack the drain plugs on your gearbox, xfercase and diffs, any water ingested wont have emulsified yet and will be sitting on the bottom of the oil & will drain out thru the loose plug threads.

That would add over 13 hours to one of my regular trips! Easier to change oils after trips involving water.

Maybe check the breathers,if you haven't already.
I have done the OTT on the Cape up & back twice in the D2,had no water in anything. Many deep creek crossings. Was stuck in one for over an hour as well
    Oh,the carpet got pretty wet.

Yep, I'd be guessing the breather's broken/come adrift.

Where I used to live I had to drive through a river just to get in and out every day, plus there are multiple causeways around here (although they're all dry ATM ) and I've been through a couple of flooded, raging rivers that picked up and moved 3000kg of Deefer 3m downstream () and have never had water in the t/case or diffs either.

From memory the rear diff runs up somewhere near the tail lights or rear guard. All the others run into the engine bay,if they have not been modified. You will find them up high at the rear of the engine.
