    Need a mechanic near Dubbo

G'day I have recently bought a Discovery 2 td5 auto. My mechanic hates it. He likes to change oil and replace wiper blades but anything that actually involves being a real mechanic is not for him. He knew the vehicle before I bought it and groaned loudly when I told him I had bought it.

It is a 2002 tdi auto with 161,000 on the clock. It drives really well but he tells me it has an oil leak from the U seal between the timing cover and where it meets the head an block. He says it is a "very big job" and he also says "it is a job we will not do." My research tells me it would be necessary to remove the radiator, head and timing cover to do the job. I have done this on old Series Land Rovers but really don't want to get greasy these days.

So. I am looking for a mechanic within a reasonable distance of Dubbo who actually likes and understands Land Rovers.

I have owned a lot of Land Rovers in the past so I know they come with a few peculiarities. Despite this, I like them and more importantly, so does my wife.

    Any ideas please?

    Thanks

    Mike in Dubbo

Mike can you be more specific where the leak is (a photo perhaps)

I dont think said leak is as bad as it sounds nor as difficult as described...

    cheers

I've had this recently done on my TD5, (Defender thought but shoudl be very similar).

You don't need to remove the head to do the timing cover. If you remove the head you will likely find other issues that will cost lots of money to fix. (If you go to the effort to do the head then you'd feel guilty putting it back in without crack testing etc.... my Mechanic replaced the tiing cover on mine due to a damaged housing due to a failed fan bearing, and luckily he did it without touching the head.

I think you might find that the oil leak is somewhere else. For example The Cam Plug I think was a source of oil on mine and is a simple fix. Also the power steering pump was leaking and spreading oil around that area.

I'd reckon a nice steam clean and wathching where the oil is coming from might save you a lot of time and effort.

Sound s bit like the so called mechanic you are referring to is a mechanical fitter not a mechanic. Too many of these around these days. They dont have a clue how to do any real repairs. Find a decent Land Rover mechanic. The TD5 motor is not a hard motor to work on.

    Still looking

G'day. Thanks for the comments. When I first bought the vehicle I pulled the engine cover off and had a look around as the mechanic had told me about the "leak". There was what I would call a seep around the front of the cam and a little oil below but it was far from extensive and was not running down further. I sprayed a bit of degreaser on it and hosed it off and it was quite clean. Despite this, when it was serviced the next day, the report that came with it told me of the "leak" and the "large job" to fix it.

I really don't think it is at all bad but it would seem that the mechanic has a set against it and really wants me to go away. That is why I am still looking for a suitable mechanic in or around Dubbo.

    Cheers

You probably already know, but there is actually a dealer in Dubbo - and they have been that since the TD5 was being sold, so they should have the skill to deal with it.

Whether they are prepared to look at a ten year old car and what they would charge may be other matters, but could be worth talking to them.

G'day John. I don't have a great deal of faith in dealers. As you suggested, they think any vehicle over about three years of age is ancient history and they do tend to charge like wounded bulls. As well as that, when I have had work done by dealers, they have usually mucked it up. Back in the 1980s I bought two new Land Rovers both of which had lists of faults longer than my arm. My local dealer totally failed to fix them and even managed to make some worse. Eventually I found out about Arthur Garthon in Penshurst an his staff did fix most of the problems.

I think I will have to find a local mechanic who has some time for European vehicles in general and try him. I have a couple of leads from friends at the model flying club.

    Cheers

    I concur,

you need a mechanic because what you have now is a filter fitter...

The seal I think your filter fitter means very rarely leaks unless some other filter fitter has had a go at another part of the motor related to it and botched it. I suspect that the leak is more likely to be coming from another area and running onto then down that seal.

If the leak is coming from the large knock in plugs that sit inline with the cam Any filter fitter that calls that a big job needs to be vigorously massaged about the head and janglies with a large shifter and the FBH and politley told to pull his head in then show his certification. I dont care if it is on a d2 auto with all of the fruit calling that a hard job is akin to calling IE a good internet browser, A massive exxageration given by someone who doesnt know what the hell they are talking about.

I'll quite happily state that short of not having the strength my 6yo son given the tools and stepped through the process would be able to fix the 3 most common leaks on the TD5.

I don't either - and as a result I really can't comment on the Dubbo dealer as they have never done any work for me. I have bought parts from them on the odd occasion, but I have yet to find a part I need that they stock! And if it has to come in there are a number of places I can get them quicker, cheaper and more accurately!

The only mechanic I really know in Dubbo is the one who does pink slips for me - and he has never worked on any of my cars. He has however worked on several of my relatives cars, and they regard him fairly highly. If you would like a lead to him, give me a PM. Of course he may turn out to be your filter fitter!
