    Rangie ZF into Disco?

My S2 Disco TD5's ZF has started leaking oil. Looks to be coming from the front pump gasket. It's done 305,000 km, and my local auto guy says he'll only do a full reco if I want a warranty, which I do if I pay to get things done.
    So, I can get a trans out of a P38 ( the car, not the fighter plane). It's a 4HP24EH. Not sure if mine's a 22 or a 24.
The question is; will it work? I'm pretty sure it will fit if I change the obvious stuff, but one's a V8, and the other one, er, isn't. Any insights, folks?

From what I have read around here, the 4HP24 is longer than the 4HP22 as found in Disco's (at least D2, unsure about D1). It is around 15 - 25mm longer so may fit if the driveshafts have enough "give".

As for mounts and bellhousings etc I am not sure. Using the V8 torque converter for a TD5 is apparently quite an improvement, drops the stall to allow more diesel torque to be used.

I'll be watching this one, hoping to do something myself to strengthen the auto. On a side note, Wholesale Automatic Transmissions do a heavy duty valve upgrade for the 4HP22.

    Cheers,
    Nova

Thanks Nova. Food for thought. I hadn't considered the converter part. The length bit worries me. Guess ill check when I'm home next

Before worrying about fitting. Connections (electrically) will be different. '22 is hyd/cable controlled, '22E/24 is electrically controlled.

Yeah, I did know that, but, dill that I am, I'm not sure which one I have. It's always seemed to be electronic, but, as I say, I'll get under and look next time I'm home.

It (the D2/P38) will still have an elec connector, but round by memory with about 2 dozen small pins. The earlier one has only a few pins, and larger.

But, as Dave Ashcroft says, both types were used in P38's and Disco 2's, so the problem shouldn't be insurmountable, you would think.

So, if I'm reading that right, my D2 should be electronic, as I have always thought?

Sorry, missed this one ( easy to do on the phone app ). Yeah, the BMW forums talk about connectors; something else to check.
