Disco lost drive, where to start!!!

I have a 94 300tdi auto. Driving home tonight and then all of a sudden it felt like the auto went into neutral and revved out. I rolled it to the side of the road and then tried reverse, drive, 1 2 3, low range and it would not go anywhere. It is running fine but is like it is not going into gear.

Any suggestions of where to start looking before I start pulling things apart tomorrow.

By the way, my trusty old series 2 towed it home no worries. I should stick to the 1966 technology. Not much to go wrong there!!!

    Cheers
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, the symptoms point at the common problem of the main-shaft failure.

The main-shaft gets worm because of a bad lubrication on the teeth area that drives the input gear.
Land Rover has introduced a cross-drilled input gear to cure this problem.

You either rebuild the gearbox or replace it.

I went through this on both my RRC and 110.

If your problem is what lebbanon described above you can replace the output shaft of the auto[held on with 1 bolt] by removing the pto cover on the transfer and removing the possibly worn input gear all while still in the car, i replaced my input gear with a new cross drilled one from the UK[cost 45pounds]. Check first that you havent lost tranny fluid which cost your drive? Others more experienced than me should chime in soon...

Hi Bren, this may sound silly but have you checked that the transfer case is still engaged? Many years ago, when I was new to my 110, the transfer slipped into neutral and caused a mild panic until I worked out it was not engaged. Cheers, 130man.

Thanks for that. Yep I put it into low range and then back to high thinking it may have been that 130man.

First question is of course, does it hold in park? Second question, does it drive with the diff lock engaged? Thirdly, hand brake still work? That should narrow down the point of failure.

Ok failure is in front of the park pawl, so it's likely either hydraulic failure or drive plate failure. I suggest you remove any cover off the bottom of the bellhousing and shine a torch in. I don't know what is under the 300tdi, the V8 has a small round plate you can undo to see in through.

Back again!! It has been a busy 2 weeks. So, I had time today to take off the front plate and could not see much at all. Before I pull the box out, are there any other suggestions? I read somewhere that replacing the oil and filter fixes a lot of problems. I can't imagine it will fix mine. There was some gear oil coming out the bottom of the housing, so I am guessing it might be the front torque converter seal!! If this leaks the oil out, does it stop any drive in the gearbox?
    Cheers
    Bren
