    Turbo shot????

Heading up the Oodnadatta track yesterday, mid afternoon, everytime the turbo kicked in it whined and sounded like exhaust gas was leaking out somewhere under pressure. Took off manifold last night, and the turbo and exhaust is FULL of oil, not just the slight leakage that happens. Couple of the turbo vanes are chipped too. Has the turbo had it???? Suggestions? Solutions?? Bear in mind I'm still in the ass end of nowhere right now

I would say yes if that is the case. Sounds like something may have damaged your turbo.

You should be able to limp home???

Worst case scenario you can wire the wastegate in the open position and drive it "NA" - will blow lots of black smoke, but shouldn't damage anything.

Not sure what you are driving but it sounds like a stuffed turbo to me.
You are not in the ass end of no where you are in the middle of everywhere.
I would be trying to get to the largest town and getting a turbo shipped to you.
If you were heading North don't forget that the Greyhound bus goes through Marla Bore
This may be a way of getting another unit to you.
    Where are you?

300tdi engine. Sanpped two of the three exhaust bolts while taking the manifold out so can't connect it up again. Oil spatter everywhere. Looks like I am losing quite a bit, entire lefft hand side of block is coated with congealed oil, but engine oil pressure still within acceptable range. Limping towards Sturt highway right now heading north.

No worries mate - it's all part and parcel of the trip. also makes the case for getting one of those nice big Isuzu lumps to drop in instead that I keep hearing about

Out on the bitumen again after a night of driving at 40-50kph, heading towards Alice Springs now to see what can be done there. Would like to be able to actually open up the turbo and take a look at the insides, but the bolts are seized, as any bolt connected to the exhaust system tends to do.

Anyone have any experience rebuilding a 300tdi turbo? If distant memory serves from home, once upon a time it was possible to buy just the inner cartridge - vein and turbo fan assembly - for substantially cheaper than the entire turbo. Not sure if that option is available in AU though.

On a separate note, anyone heading out bush, leave the satphone and the EPIRB at home, just bring a 3G Amazon Kindle with you. Thing picks up a signal like you wouldn't believe....

I was being somewhat facetious - I'm not actually recommending that people chuck out their satphones in place of a $100 ebook reader....
